Mocha Mousse Lip Lites

The naughty and neutral Mocha Mousse Lip Lites was first served in 1997. Bonne Bell was mad for mocha in the decade of cafe culture being served hot and fresh, popping up in big cities and smaller towns alike. After hearing Pantone’s color of the year for 2025 being the same name, though different shades, naturally I thought of this Bonne Bell icon. Bonne Bell was always lightyears ahead of trends and for that I will always give them praise.

Mocha Mousse enveloped lips in a universally flattering deep, dusty rose-brown shade with a soft silver shimmer subtly suspended throughout. Mocha Mousse described as a “your lips but better” type of shade. One that polishes your look no matter your skin tone. On lighter skin tones Mocha Mousse deepened the natural lip color with a neutral pinky-brown nude tone, while serving as a lighter pink nude for medium to deeper skin tones.

Mocha Mousse was whipped up specially for a 1997 BOGO promotion where you got a full-size Lip Lites and closely matching Lip DeFiner lip liner together for the price of one.

Mocha Mousse came with the Mocha Lip DeFiner which was also a universal pinky brown shade. For deeper skin tones however, I would have paired with the Fudge or Chutney Lip DeFiner to contrast with a medium to deeper skin tone more harmoniously.

By 1997 Lip Lites also came with sinfully delicious matching  flavors, whilst Lip Lites were fragrance-free from their 1980’s debute to about 1995. Mocha Mousse’s flavor was a decadent rich coffee chocolate mousse aroma that was sweetly subtle.

By 2005 Lip Lites got a new look when Bonne Bell introduced the sleek and slim tube design, along with a new logo design to keep it fresh in modern. Lip Lites went through a few minor formula changes throughout their long lived (but not long enough) life, but remained pretty similar to their original formula.

Mocha Mousse’s universally loved color and flavor was pretty consistent throughout its 18 years in the Lip Lites line-up. The 1997 tube has some packaging wear making it look much warmer and rustic than it actually is, while the later design from 2005 shows a slight shade adjustment. Towards the end the shade became paler and more of a pinky rose with less brown tones but it’s delicious mocha mousse flavor stayed the same.
