Holiday 2004 Pt. II: Pet Pals

Our beloved BFF Pet Pals came bundled up for Holiday 2004 decked out in gingham patterns ready to pucker up with brand new flavors for the winter season ahead. Each cuddly Smackersville critter came bearing the sweetest Smackers for this collection, giving us their own homemade treats to lick our lips to. The theme of the collection was all about sharing the love of the season with our best Bonne Bell buds and their brilliant new flavors of the season with one another.

The packaging very much reflected this message including the six piece tin with Cupcake the cat, Arctic the polar bear and Starberry the husky huddled around a freshly baked cupcake.

Tin lid: "Best friends are always there for you! Best friends make everyday special! Best friends always make you laugh! Best friends are the best! Best friends love the share your treats!"

Sides of the tin: "Friends are there to share your ice cream! Friends stand by your side! Friends make you laugh! Friends are there when you just feel like lounging! Everyone needs friends!"

I'll never forget finding the display for these very early in the season that year, towards the end of August in 2004 in the Meijer cosmetics department. I was so happy to find a sliver of Holiday early that year!

Holiday 2004 Pet Pals:

Cupcake’s Nilla Mint

Sweet’s Cinnamon Ice Cream

Sugar’s Plum

Arctic’s Candy Cane Cocoa

Moose’s White Choco Cream

Starberry’s Slush

Six delightful new flavors were gifted to us for the sweetest season of the year! There are few things more exciting than new Bonne Bell holiday flavors!

Cupcake’s Nilla Mint- Cupcake the cat made us a delicious vanilla cupcake with a dizzying dollop of peppermint buttercream frosting to shine our smackers to.

Sweet’s Cinnamon Ice Cream- Sweet the pup brought us such a fun new flavor! This smelled and tasted like those cinnamon candy imperials sprinkled in a spicy cinnamon vanilla ice cream. Smooth with a little spice. My favorite of the bunch!

Sugar’s Plum- Sugar the bunny gifted us a new plum dandy flavor that was very different than the original Sugar Plum staple. Sugar picked a freshly ripened plum from the farmer's market for this flavor.

Arctic’s Candy Cane Cocoa- Arctic the polar bear whipped up a cool candy cane hot cocoa concoction of a polar peppermint candy cane melting into a rich cup of hot cocoa.

Moose’s White Choco Cream- Moose was a new Smackerville Pet Pal that brought us this brand new toasty white chocolate hazelnut flavor that was incredibly delish! Slightly spiced, sweet and nutty. My second favorite of the collection.

Starberry’s Slush- Starberry the husky dog kept it cool with her blue raspberry slush flavor that was berry cool and fruity.

Check out each Pet Pal angel cuddled up next to a cozy Christmas treat! I love the scarf detail each one has and how they're cozied up next to their tasty treats. The micro sparkle labels that twinkled like shimmering snow with the checkered pattern details and the "2004 Special Holiday Collection" really gave these a special touch.

Here’s a few stores ads from November and December 2004 highlighting the Pet Pals collection.

I love how Longs Drugs used the old Bonne Bell logo even for this timeline then. That particular Bonne Bell logo was retired and last used in 1994, 10 years before these store ads.

The Pet Pals collection came in many forms from the special 6 pc. tin to 2 trio canes. There was also Walmart exclusive packaging like the 8 pc. Party Pack and trio bags. There were no other new flavors though, including the Party Pack that had two repeat flavors in it. How awesome would that have been to have two special flavors to hunt down for this?

Bonne Bell and best friends go together so well, and each Pet Pals collection captured that perfectly. Bonne Bell really was our lips best friends over the decades with all of the amazing products and flavors, they created a large community long before the days of social media came along. Stay tuned for a Christmas constellation of flavor for the final Holiday 2004 post, Pt. III next!
