Gumdrops

It’s no doubt that gumdrops and spice drops lead the way into Candyland and have adorned every adorable gingerbread house ever created. Sugary sweet dollops of gooey gummy goodness make the perfect Lip Smacker and we got our first taste from Bonne Bell of this beloved Holiday treasure for Christmas 1998. Gumdrops come in so many delectable flavors that of course it made the perfect lip-smackin' glossy treat, and was ones of those Bonne Bell flavors we got many different iterations over the years.

Well, earlier if you count the Herself the Elf Bubble Gumdrop from 1983 but I believe that was more of a play on words in relation to the character, since it was just the original Bubble Gum Lip Smacker with a cute new name for the collection.

Grape Gum Drop was our first introduction to this seasonal sweet treat and was all dressed up in the iconic Holiday 1998 star-studded collection. A sweet and juicy, glittery grape gummy that perfected our pouts for the shimmer-iest season of all. This came out the same year the Cosmic Lips line made a big boom and shared the same shimmery formula. This flavor was actually used again but altered slightly for the Fanta Grape Lip Smacker that came 8 years after this premiered. Back then this timeline felt worlds apart, but hindsight wasn't that far in between at all. Grape Gum Drop was more candied and spiced even, while the Fanta Grape was more effervescent, however they shared the same discernible grape.

Not for another 7 years would be see a gumdrop again, this time in familiar-y fruity flavor, Gum Drop Candy. Introduced for Holiday 2005, Gum Drop Candy had a very familiar flavor profile, similar to the beloved Gooey/Gummy Fruits that came before it. You could smell and taste a bright, chewy cherry mixed with gushy grape that created a fruit snack fairytale for the Christmas season.

Gumdrop flavors were one of those shooting star Bonne Bell flavors that we would see randomly over the years and wasn't a regular in the Holiday collections like Sugar Plum. We wouldn't see another one until Holiday 2011 with the release of Gumdrop Pop. A spiced satsuma orange gumdrop flavor that felt a little more like a spice drop but incredibly nice nonetheless. It even received it's own matching Liquid Lip Smacker! It featured an adorable elf character on the label making it even sweeter.

After this, we did see gumdrop flavors more regularly in the 2010's up until the Bell family sold the brand in 2015. Holiday 2013 brought us the same spiced satsuma orange gumdrop flavor named simply Gumdrop. This was a Lip Smacker Shimmer formula that gave a fruity frosty finish making the flavor extra festive. The label was a simple but elegant, metallic midnight winter theme.

Gumdrop Glitter Pop dazzled in the Holiday 2014 collection in a brand new fruity flavor. This definitely smelled and tasted like a bowl of sugared gumdrops, fruity but no distinctive fruits to call out like previous versions. Gumdrop Glitter Pop was part of the Brights collection and had a jelly formula, very much on par with the Jello Lip Smackers. The translucent formula made these so fun to slick on and the neon tube was reminiscent of the brightest Christmas lights.

Bonne Bell also ventured into gumdrops the with the Disney collaboration, giving us Minnie Mouse in Gumdrop and Gumdrop Pop. Gumdrop was what was now the signature flavor, the spiced satsuma orange gumdrop while Gumdrop Pop was completely different and very similar to the Ribbon Candy Lip Smacker from Holiday 2013.

Things were only about to get much shinier!

Gumdrop became such a regular flavor in Bonne Bell's lineup it even received placement in the liquid lip glosses, starting with Snap Gloss in 2006. Snap Gloss came with two glosses that you could snap together and connect. You could mix and match or trade with your bestie (if you didn't have the whole collection already!). Gumdrop came connected with the Wild Raspberry Snap Gloss. The Gumdrop Snap Gloss was exactly like the Holiday 2005 Gum Drop Candy.

Next it got its first Liquid Lip Smacker in Gumdrop Pop, matching the regular Lip Smacker namesake from Holiday 2011. It wouldn't be complete without adding Gumdrop Pop in the world renowned Lip Sparkler/Sponge-on Sparkler collection in the same year, Holiday 2011. The dreamy, creamy gloss with snow drifts of lovely lilac shimmer, made lips look like sugared gumdrop goodness. The tube had the most adorable glittering gumdrops on it with the very rare and short lived cursive Lip Smacker font.

Bonne Bell thought way outside of the box and innovated candy flavors from the very beginning and continued creating so many candy confections to give us the sweetest smiles. Bonne Bell really knew how to create flavors for everyone and knew how to perfectly execute them to bring us the best possible version in the world. They laid the bricks to Candyland in the world of lip gloss, a road not traveled by any other beauty brands until years later.
